GE Aerospace originally known as General Electric’s aviation division, has a rich history dating back to 1917. During World War I, GE engineers developed a turbosupercharger, enabling aircraft to maintain engine power at higher altitudes, significantly enhancing aviation capabilities. This innovation marked GE’s entry into the aerospace industry and laid the foundation for future advancements.
In 1941, the United States Army Air Corps selected GE’s Lynn, Massachusetts plant to build the nation’s first jet engine, based on Sir Frank Whittle’s design. By 1942, GE had successfully tested the I-A engine, powering America’s first jet aircraft, the Bell P-59 Airacomet. This milestone positioned GE as a leader in jet propulsion technology.
Post-World War II, GE expanded its aerospace operations, establishing a significant plant near Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1949. This facility, later known as Evendale, became GE Aerospace’s world headquarters.
The company also formed strategic partnerships, such as the 1971 joint venture with France’s Snecma (now Safran), creating CFM International. This collaboration led to the development of the CFM56 engine, one of the most successful jet engines in aviation history.
In a significant corporate restructuring, GE announced in 2021 its plan to split into three separate companies, focusing on healthcare, energy and aviation. By April 2024, this transition culminated in GE Aerospace becoming an independent, publicly traded company listed on the New York Stock Exchange. This move allowed GE Aerospace to concentrate exclusively on its core competencies in aviation and aerospace technologies.
As of 2024, H. Lawrence Culp Jr. serves as the Chairman and CEO of GE Aerospace, bringing extensive experience from his tenure at General Electric and other industrial sectors. The company’s ownership structure includes significant institutional investors, with Vanguard Group Inc. holding approximately 8.3% and Fidelity Management & Research Co. LLC about 6.2% of the shares. This diversified ownership underscores the confidence of major investment firms in GE Aerospace’s strategic direction and market position.
